Vodoun, (Voodoo) is the traditional religion of Haiti and is one of the most misunderstood spiritual practices of all time. The persecution of Vodoun began when French slave owners, outlawed the religion in Haiti. Voodoo played a large part in the successful slave rebellions. This is when Voodoo was labeled as evil”. in actuality it has a very natural healing methodology. Hollywood producing scripts of zombies, evil sorcery, and ritual murder spread the “spooky fear” label as it reinforced the Western connection of voodoo to images of black magic and sticking pins in dolls, with human sacrifice.

The practice of trance possession is very alien and intimidating to most persons raised in Christian traditions even though possession of spirit is found within Christian history. The god Loas is seen as demonic rather than a divine symbol.. During the 1930′s, a persecution intended to rid Voodoo from the world was unsuccessful.  In 1996, Vodoun was declared the official religion of Benin, Africa, it’s land of origin. So you see there is a  world wide misunderstanding of most African Religions and practices.

“Voodoo” as we know it today in Haiti originated with African slaves from traditional Benin Africa. It is a local practice and blended with other African traditions such as elements of Masonry, ritual magick, and Catholicism. It created a unique faith that has survived some of the worst persecutions. The word ‘voodoo’ is a corruption of the word ‘vodun,’ a word that means  ‘spirit god’ in the West African Fon language of Benin.

Vodoun  encompasses 2 traditions -

• 1. Obeah, or folk magic, also known colloquially as ‘hoodoo.’
• 2. Lao- the ancient African worship, an initiatory system.

The main worship  in Vodoun is “possessing”, whereby the Loas or ancestors are ask to take possession the bodies of worshippers. This practice is the true Vodoun, the traditional ancestral root of the religion.

Vodou cosmology In the cosmology of Vodoun, there are three levels of divinity:

• Gran Met, or “grand master,” also known as Bondye, from the French ‘bon dieu, gos not directly worshipped.
• The Loas, or Lwas, the “Mysteries,” the lesser divinities which are central to worship. The Loas are not gods, but ancestors, great men and women, Kings, and divine mod god’ – the true deity, an entity which presides over the spirit world but iessengers.
• The Dead – ancestral spirits and the spirits of saints. These are ever present with the practitioner, even prior to initiation.

Baron (Baron Samedi) – the god or Loa of the Dead is normally pictured as a grinning skeleton in a top hat. He is one of the most recognized of the loas outside of Vodoun.
