sarcophagus- a funeral receptacle for a dead, or in the case of a vampire, half dead, corpse. They are most commonly carved from stone. The word “sarcophagus” comes from the Greek sarx meaning “flesh”, and phagein meaning “to eat”. Therefore sarkophagus literally means “flesh-eating”. The word came to refer to the limestone, thought to decompose the corpses placed within it.
Sarcophagi were more commonly designed to be placed above ground. Therefore they were very often ornately decorated and elaborately carved. Some were built to be freestanding, as a part of an elaborate tomb . Others were intended for being placed in crypts. In Europe they were used much later. Sarcophagi, sometimes metal or plaster as well as limestone, were also used by the ancient Romans until the early Christian burial preference for burial underground.
